In the beginning, the year was 1978, and promising to tell the story of Deer Lodge County history, the Copper Village was lacking a museum collection. Montana Historical Society personnel and Copper Village staff and volunteers conducted research, began collecting historic objects that were needed, and developed the museum.
Copper Village Museum and Art Center moved into the City Hall Center in 1988. A need for more room and the challenge to help preserve a piece of history was the major factors in the move.
Copper Village successfully produces special events which have grown to be recognized nationally. We are still expanding our programs with great success and continuing out renovation of the City Hall Center.

Jack Nicklaus Design

As one of the largest Superfund waste areas in America, the site was also one of the most challenging to design. Nicklaus’ first signature design in Montana incorporated many historic relics of the copper smelter, from the flue and oven remains, to fairways that border and wind their way between black slag. The slag, a by-product of the copper smelting process, is also featured in all of the bunkers on the course providing a stunning contrast to white bunker sand found on other courses.
The Old Works features generous fairway landing areas bordered by native grasses with large undulating greens. Warm Springs Creek, once utilized by the smelting operation and now hosting a healthy population of trout, is negotiated a number of times during the round and adds character to the layout. Nicklaus also incorporated five sets of tees for each hole allowing the course to measure from 5,290 to over 7,700 yards offering a challenge to players of all skill levels

Spectacular grey limestone cliffs and pink and white granite formations rise 1,200 feet above the canyon’s narrow floor. Lost Creek Falls, in the northwest corner of the park, cascades over a 50-foot drop to provide one of the most scenic and popular spots in the park. Wildlife, especially mountain goats, golden eagles and bighorn sheep are frequently seen on the cliffs above, and pika are often seen and heard in the rock piles in the upper park. Camping, fishing, picnicking, bicycling and wildlife viewing is available.
If you prefer a longer hike, walk the Forest Service trail just north of the falls parking area. The trail winds for several miles along Lost Creek through forests and meadows with great views of the surrounding mountains.
The park is 502 acres in size and is 6,211 feet in elevation. There are 25 campsites in the park. RV/trailer size is limited to 23 feet.[/two-thirds]
Anaconda Smoke Stack
State Park
100 Smelter Road
Anaconda, Montana 59711
(406) 287-3541
The old Anaconda Copper Company smelter stack, completed in 1919, is one of the tallest free-standing brick structures in the world at 585 feet. The inside diameter is 75 feet at the bottom, tapering to 60 feet at the top. In comparison, the Washington Monument is 555 feet tall.
The stack dominates the landscape like the company once dominated the area’s economic life. Since the smelter closed in 1980, the stack has become a symbol of the challenges that face communities dependent on finite resources.
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the stack may be viewed and photographed only from a distance. Interpretive signs that detail its history are located in the viewing site near Goodman Park.
